Australia is a huge country covering three time zones & an area of over three million square miles – a flight from Perth to Sydney takes nearly five hours! Flying is obviously the fastest mode of transportation but there is also an extensive rail & coach network that will allow you to experience the many diverse landscapes of Australia at a more leisurely pace. Alternatively, self-drive rental options include motorhomes & hire cars but do take into account the vast driving distances involved.

Flights

International flights arrive into Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Melbourne, Perth & Sydney. Journey times from the U.K are typically between eighteen & twenty-two hours. It therefore makes sense to break your journey on-route. Scheduled flights allow stopovers in North & South America, the Pacific or Asia. We offer return, one-way, open jaw, multi-sector and round-the-world airfares. Browse our discounted airfares

Vehicle Hire   Hiring a car or motorhome in Australia enables you to see much more of the country at your own pace & stop off in "out of the way" places which would otherwise be inaccessible. However, you should take account of the vast distances involved & plan accordingly. Also remember that a 4WD vehicle is essential if you wish to see some of the more remote areas in National Parks. Approximate journey times can be found below.

Journey times
Sydney to Brisbane - 5 days
Melbourne to Adelaide - 6 days
Perth & South West Coast - 4 days

Coach   Australia has an extensive scheduled coach network with the main operators being McCafferty’s/Greyhound for national services & Murray’s who operate exclusively on the East Coast. Surprisingly, coach travel generally takes less time to cover the same distances as rail travel with the added bonus of being able to break your journey if you wish to. A variety of passes are available for international visitors.

Rail   Rail travel is an excellent way to see and experience Australia in comfort and safety. Travel on some of the world’s legendary rail journeys. The "Ghan" from Adelaide to Darwin passes through vast sheep and cattle stations, ancient mountain ranges and over red baked earth. Alternatively take the Indian Pacific and traverse Australia from coast to coast, between the sparkling waters of the Pacific and the Indian Ocean, a journey of some 4352 kilometres!
